• 2.0 out of 5 stars from M -- A Let Down: Slow, Little Action, Wordy : I have very much enjoyed the previous 2 Elena Standish books and was very much looking forward to this one; however, I just finished it after starting and stopping reading it many times. This book was very wordy, what could have been said in a short sentence was ballooned out into unnecessary flowery and philosophical language that just came across as fluff writing and not enjoyable. The characterization felt forced and I was confused by some of the outbursts of the characters when it did not fit the scene that was taking place. Also, Peter’s feelings for Elena that were eluded to many times, did I miss something in the previous books? That felt like it came out of nowhere in this book. In short, in my opinion, not Perry’s best effort but I gave it two stars because I am very much hoping that she will come out with a 4th book that sees Captain Allenby and Elena coming together again. A romantic aspect to the story would be nice since Elena has been burnt twice by two separate men. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
• 2.0 out of 5 stars from Bookworm -- Far too long : This long awaited new installment of Elena's ventures in the field of espionage drags on and on with pages and pages rehashing the same political discourse as well as endless family reminiscences . There is a fairly decent plot and just a hint of romance, but also some glaring inconsistencies. And the ending was a foregone conclusion. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2021 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Hydra47 -- A LITTLE TO PENDANTIC : The plot was good about events leading up to WWII. However, it was often buried in to much descriptive verse of of place and emotions. I think she also was giving us a modern day warning, history repeating itself as it always does. Seems a lot of fiction these days have a political/moral leaning message in them. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from G. Stever -- Moves a lot slower than the first two books : The first two books in this series were riveting. I couldn't put them down and finished them each in one or two sittings. So it was disappointing when this one didn't live up to that standard. One of the big problems with this book is that characters we had come to know in the first two books were left out. Very little of Lucas, nothing of Margot, and while Peter was there, he was not with Elena. We get a host of new characters, none of whom we care about at all. It was OK but it took me 2 weeks to get through it. I would read a bit and then it was easy to stop because I didn't really care what was going to happen. I hope book four will come back and be like the first two. This one was mediocre at best. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2021 )

Each event was repeated over and over. The story picked up at the end but only because there was nothing more to say. In a strange way, the ending was abrupt while the rest of the book was drawn out. But alas, the books plot seemed drawn out and linger between Lila being murdered and when the suspect was arrested. I had to fast forward to the end that was brilliantly written and wrapped up. San Miguel -- i love elena standish : i was so disappointed in this book. while i love elena standish and i’m a fan of anne perry, this book was so slow and extremely repetitive. the final book could have been 1/2 the size if there wasn’t so much repetition. it was well over 1/2 the book before things started moving.
